Chapter 4 - The true "Self"

VideoIntroContentExerciseTipsQ&A

About this chapter

Part Four deals with the true “Self”, or the true “I”. You will learn in this part that it is neither your mind nor your body. Both are mere tools for execution - instruments, that the “I” uses to express itself in form.

So what is this “I”? It is something spiritual, something intangible. As all Spirit is one Spirit, it is the same in kind and quality as the Universal Consciousness - the only difference being one of degree. This means that you have unlimited resources at your disposal, for that the Universal is Almighty, Allknowing and Omnipresent. What you can think, you can create. But it requires your mental appropriation, that “asking the question and getting ready to receive the answer”. Without you staking that claim, no possession will ever come to you.

This is the essence of this part. Internalize it well, because understanding this “configuration” of your Being brings you in conscious cooperation with the Infinite Power.

As – in the spiritual realm – like attracts like, your wellbeing depends on the recognition of the wellbeing of the Whole. This means that your actions should never be selfish, but rather benefit all those involved. Nature never acts selfishly, but provides everything in abundance. As you are part of Nature, you ought to start doing the same - if you haven’t done so already.

Remember that Positive Thinking is just a first step in the right direction. It’s a means to an end. The end is the imprinting of that quality onto your Subconscious Mind, where execution and therefore manifestation takes place.

Self-denial doesn’t get you anywhere. Accept yourself the way you are at present, because if you don’t, nobody else will. But also acknowledge that you can always change what you don’t like about yourself. Accept the status quo, yet at the same time embark on the process of reinventing yourself using the methods outlined in this course.

The acknowledgment of your connection to the Universal puts you in connection with it. Consciously become the channel through which the Universal can express itself. If you learn how to get your mind out of the way, the results are likely to be perfect.

You also learn in this part that the more you give, the more you will get. This is why it’s so important to have high, noble and great ideals. The power you need in order to have those ideals comes through rest and silence, because only then are you able to concentrate, to focus on the things you desire, to reduce the distance between you and your wish, and to obtain the necessary detailed information you require on your path to manifestation.

It is the feeling that gives life to the thought, and this feeling comes through exercise, and therefore repetition. Feeling creates new neural pathways in your brain and causes your glands to release secretions. This has an immediate effect on your emotions, thus body, and will result in a new, albeit temporary, reality – just as some sad news would make you cry, or a joke would make you laugh, they are not meant to stay forever, but fade as quickly as they have appeared.

To recap: understand what this real “Self” is and what it means for your Being. This may be a true revelation, because perhaps for the first time ever you will become conscious of your real power and your true divine potential.

Enclosed herewith I hand you Part Four. This part will show you why what you think, or do, or feel, is an indication of what you are.

Thought is energy and energy is power, and it is because all the religions, sciences and philosophies with which the world has heretofore been familiar have been based upon the manifestation of this energy instead of the energy itself, that the world has been limited to effects, while causes have been ignored or misunderstood.

For this reason we have God and the Devil in religion, positive and negative in science, and good and bad in philosophy.

The Master Key reverses the process; it is interested only in the cause, and the letters received from students tell a marvellous story; they indicate conclusively that students are finding the cause whereby they may secure for themselves health, harmony, abundance, and whatever else may be necessary for their welfare and happiness.

Life is expressive and it is our business to express ourselves harmoniously and constructively. Sorrow, misery, unhappiness, disease and poverty are not necessities and we are constantly eliminating them.

But this process of eliminating consists in rising above and beyond limitation of any kind. He who has strengthened and purified his thought need not concern himself about microbes, and he who has come into an understanding of the Law of Abundance will go at once to the source of supply. It is thus that fate, fortune, and destiny will be controlled as readily as a captain controls his ship, or an engineer his train.

The true "Self"

4:1

The »I« of you is not the physical body; that is simply an instrument which the »I« uses to carry out its purposes; the »I« cannot be the mind, for the mind is simply another instrument which the »I« uses with which to think, reason, and plan.

This and the following sentences are among the most important in the whole Master Key System. This is about recognising who we really are. Through our upbringing and socialisation, many people have identified mainly with their bodies. Now, however, this view is changing as we learn that both body and mind are only tools. The true 'I' is identified as the actual controlling element, and therein lies the secret of all attainment. Since this true 'I' is spiritual in nature, it has infinite resources at its disposal, waiting to be drawn upon, as always.

4:2

The »I« must be something which controls and directs both the body and the mind; something which determines what they shall do and how they shall act. When you come into a realization of the true nature of this »I«, you will enjoy a sense of power which you have never before known.

In practice, this means that once you have recognised this true 'I', all you have to do is to use the other techniques such as idealisation, visualisation and concentration to bring something out of the space of potential, the invisible, into the space of reality. There are practically only the limits that you impose on yourself.

4:3

Your personality is made up of countless individual characteristics, peculiarities, habits, and traits of character; these are the result of your former method of thinking, but they have nothing to do with the real »I.«

They have nothing to do with the 'I' because they have been given to you by your circumstances. But the real 'I' is perfect and perfect and not subject to these man-made constructs.

4:4

When you say »I think« the »I« tells the mind what it shall think; when you say »I go« the »I« tells the physical body where it shall go; the real nature of this »I« is spiritual, and is the source of the real power which comes to men and women when they come into a realization of their true nature.

You can also call your 'I' your Higher Self. It is your true identity. It decides how your life will be shaped. If you recognise its spiritual origin and make use of it, you will find that your life becomes more and more benevolent and harmonious. Above all, you will come out of the separation that has been falsely created by your sense perception. When you take responsibility for all that you interpret through your senses, there is no 'other'. It is all yours. They are all constructs of your own consciousness. This is a big step towards liberation and mastery. It strengthens you and no longer lets you remain in a possible victim role, from which condemnation or responsibility is held.

4:5

The greatest and most marvellous power which this »I« has been given is the power to think, but few people know how to think constructively, or correctly, consequently they achieve only indifferent results. Most people allow their thoughts to dwell on selfish purposes, the inevitable result of an infantile mind. When a mind becomes mature, it understands that the germ of defeat is in every selfish thought.

With the Master Key System you learn not only to think technically and in terms of content correctly and also much bigger, but also in terms of your fellow human beings and beyond self-interest. Previously, we were taught, especially in Western culture, that we ourselves are the centre of attention. Now, however, we learn that everything that benefits us must also benefit everyone else - that selfishness leads to certain defeat because it means rebelling against the laws of nature.

4:6

The trained mind knows that every transaction must benefit every person who is in any way connected with the transaction, and any attempt to profit by the weakness, ignorance or necessity of another will inevitably operate to his disadvantage.

This statement alone - applied by you in daily life - will have an extremely positive effect on your further life, as well as on the lives of your fellow human beings. The common thing about programming and conditioning is that it is subconscious and is only registered as an effect by the mind, but is not initially prevented from being carried out. Thus you automatically 'utter' things which you later realise were either not true or had a detrimental effect on others. Only by becoming conscious do you gradually gain control over such behaviour and change it into the opposite.

4:7

This is because the individual is a part of the Universal. A part cannot antagonize any other part, but, on the contrary, the welfare of each part depends upon a recognition of the interest of the whole.

If you, as an individual, direct your attention more to the overall interest, this is a cause that has corresponding effects. This means nothing else than that the total interest also directs its attention to you. This will inevitably improve your quality of life.

Do you see how this system is gradually leading to a collective upliftment of all entities on the planet? We all have a responsibility that goes far beyond ourselves as living beings. If we fail in our own development, we thereby hinder not only the levels below us, but also those above us, for they very much exist.

4:8

Those who recognize this principle have a great advantage in the affairs of life. They do not wear themselves out. They can eliminate vagrant thoughts with facility. They can readily concentrate to the highest possible degree on any subject. They do not waste time or money upon objects which can be of no possible benefit to them.

Through conscious, systematic and constructive thinking, the benefits for oneself and all involved are recognised. Here again silence comes into play, because only in it is it possible to concentrate thoughts and direct them towards a specific goal. There you become aware of the theme step by step. It takes more and more shape in your imagination and ways and possibilities arise to realise the idea.

Attention is required here, because you cannot understand and comprehend the creative process with your mind. But it is your openness that makes you aware of new opportunities that serve your goal. Thus the original thought, held steadily in consciousness, gradually leads to its being strengthened and so can take shape in the outer world.

4:9

If you cannot do these things it is because you have thus far not made the necessary effort. Now is the time to make the effort. The result will be exactly in proportion to the effort expended. One of the strongest affirmations which you can use for the purpose of strengthening the will and realizing your power to accomplish, is: »I can be what I will to be.«

Although it has already been mentioned at the beginning, it is made clear here once again that the Master Key System is not about merely expanding and improving intellectual understanding, but about then transforming the idea into practical values. This step has to be taken, because how else is something to be represented in the 3rd dimension. So it all starts with a thought in your consciousness, but then leads to you becoming active, and when you move into action, the result is practically guaranteed.

4:10

Every time you repeat it realize who and what this »I« is; try to come into a thorough understanding of the true nature of the »I«; if you do, you will become invincible; that is, provided that your objects and purposes are constructive and are therefore in harmony with the creative principle of the Universe.

This is extremely important to understand, for it is this knowledge of your true 'I' that gives you powers that you would not have even begun to admit to yourself a short time ago. Haanel spoke in the preface of an 'outstanding personality', and this can only develop in you if you are aware of who you are and what unimagined potential lies within you.

4:11

If you make use of this affirmation, use it continuously, night and morning, and as often during the day as you think of it, and continue to do so until it becomes a part of you; form the habit.

Creating habits is the be-all and end-all. You have already learned that realisation is mainly subconscious and that awake consciousness is then perceived as an effect. But a thing can only become subconscious if it has been repeated often enough and has thus dug 'deep furrows' into the subconscious. To do this you must always repeat it, because repetition creates habits, creates new automatisms and ultimately leads to a certain subject having left the realm of thought and being reliably transformed into reality in the subconscious.

4:12

Unless you do this, you had better not start at all, because modern psychology tells us that when we start something and do not complete it, or make a resolution and do not keep it, we are forming the habit of failure; absolute, ignominious failure. If you do not intend to do a thing, do not start; if you do start, see it through even if the heavens fall; if you make up your mind to do something, do it; let nothing, no one, interfere; the »I« in you has determined, the thing is settled; the die is cast, there is no longer any argument.

Premature abandonment is one reason why many people fail to make lasting changes in their life situation. With this sentence Charles Haanel makes it clear that what you set out to do, you carry through to the end and do not allow yourself to be distracted or dissuaded by anything or anyone. By the way, this also includes your Master Key System studies, which you will complete successfully in order to derive the corresponding benefit for yourself and your fellow human beings.

4:13

If you carry out this idea, beginning with small things which you know you can control and gradually increase the effort, but never under any circumstances allowing your »I« to be overruled, you will find that you can eventually control yourself, and many men and women have found to their sorrow that it is easier to control a kingdom that to control themselves.

It will not be new to you that change is gradual; that there are no quantum leaps unless one is ready for them. But what is being expressed here is this: Set yourself a small goal, like the famous search for a parking space. Find a parking space again and again and quickly and be encouraged to turn your vision to bigger things. Complete this too and turn your vision towards greater things. In this way you increasingly empower yourself and become stronger and more powerful.

4:14

But when you have learned to control yourself you will have found the »World Within« which controls the world without; you will have become irresistible; men and things will respond to your every wish without any apparent effort on your part.

Know that the inner world is that of thought, of silent concentration of thought, directed towards a definite goal. Haanel later speaks of the imagination as your workshop in which you dream up and thus create new things. By the way, imagination is the power to imagine something. At first, a rough picture is built up in your mind's eye, to which you add more and more detail and finally, through your feelings, life force. More about this in Chapter 5.

4:15

This is not so strange or impossible as it may appear when you remember that the »World Within« is controlled by the »I« and that this »I« is a part or one with the Infinite »I« which is the Universal Energy or Spirit, usually called God.

Powerful people know about their 'I'. They are aware that they have infinite resources at their disposal. They secure them through spiritual recourse, through courage and confidence. Above all, and this will become clear later, they think their own thoughts and do not let anyone dictate to them.

4:16

This is not a mere statement or theory made for the purpose of confirming or establishing an idea, but it is a fact which has been accepted by the best religious thought as well as the best scientific thought.

This means that you too can make use of this fact. Of course, you can also choose to ignore this universal wisdom. But know that power and strength come through recognition of these laws, and recognition is the opposite of ignorance.

4:17

Herbert Spender said: »Amid all the mysteries by which we are surrounded, nothing is more certain than that we are ever in the presence of an Infinite and Eternal Energy from which all things proceed.«

This is Omnipotence, which is omnipresent and omniscient. It is therefore a thought construct that we have created for ourselves in order to define a source or origin for something. Since there are no limits to our thoughts and thus to our imagination, we can also imagine anything. But what we then imagine must necessarily be in harmony with universal laws in order to last: Also so that we can rely on it to attain certainty. You see that here the circle closes again, for our bringing into harmony is an intelligent decision which leads to further intelligent decisions and thereby to the continuance of life itself.

4:18

Lyman Abbott, in an address delivered before the Alumni of Bangor Theological Seminary, said: »We are coming to think of God as dwelling in man rather than as operating on men from without.«

That God dwells in man may be a new idea to some, but one cannot help but accept it. If 'God' is omnipresent, He must also be in you. He cannot, by definition, be outside of you. Of course, this intelligence is also present elsewhere, hence the omnipresence, but it has not disappeared from you. When you come to the point where you accept this presence within you and understand what its purpose is, you will be filled with courage and drive, with joy and exuberance, and all belief in lack and limitation will depart from you. This is to be taken literally.

4:19

Science goes a little way in its search and stops. Science finds the ever-present Eternal Energy, but Religion finds the Power behind this energy and locates it within man. But this is by no means a new discovery; the Bible says exactly the same thing, and the language is just as plain and convincing: »Know ye not that ye are the temple of the living God?« Here, then, is the secret of the wonderful creative power of the »World Within.«

Yes, you are the temple of the living God. Since the Omnipresent by definition has no opposite pole and is therefore absolute, it is also not really describable, for we can only describe differences: Up/down, light/heavy, far/near, cold/warm. But if no difference can be described, description is also impossible. Therefore, the divine requires the individual to experience and come to know itself. You are, we all are these individuals through whom the divine experiences itself. With the Master Key System, you come to a completely new understanding of yourself and the unimagined possibilities associated with it, which you now increasingly make use of.

4:20

Here is the secret of power, of mastery. To overcome does not mean to go without things. Self-denial is not success. We cannot give unless we get; we cannot be helpful unless we are strong. The Infinite is not a bankrupt and we who are the representatives of Infinite power should not be bankrupts either, and if we wish to be of service to others we must have power and more power, but to get it we must give it; we must be of service.

Unfortunately, it is still widespread in the spiritual realm to reject material things. This bad habit can only be explained by a lack of understanding, because the omnipotence of God also means that this intelligence is expressed in all material things. The higher or finer your intelligence, the more it will be expressed in products or services, because you are striving to constantly improve your life. This means an increase in quality, not necessarily quantity. In fact, you will most likely simplify your life, but surround yourself more and more with the beautiful things in life.

4:21

The more we give the more we shall get; we must become a channel whereby the Universal can express activity. The Universal is constantly seeking to express itself, to be of service, and it seeks the channel whereby it can find the greatest activity, where it can do the most good, where it can be of greatest service to mankind.

The fact that you must first give in order to finally receive may seem strange to you at first, but there is meaning and method behind it. First of all, giving means nothing other than being spiritually involved with something. This means that you give your attention in order to become aware of certain issues. Then, for example, the subject of wealth is about enriching other people, because this thought then returns to you, namely through the fact that other people want to enrich you.

You may now want to know how this applies to those who slave away in factories or open-plan offices for others, but in the end do not really have anything left. The explanation is very simple: they do not think about the creative laws. They merely follow instructions. They carry out what others have assigned to them. It is now above all for them to question previous ways of thinking and beliefs and to replace them with new ones - ones that are contrary to those they have cherished so far or about which they have not given any thought so far and which have inevitably come to pass.

4:22

The Universal cannot express through you as long as you are busy with your plans, your own purposes. Quiet the senses, seek inspiration, focus the mental activity on the within, dwell in the consciousness of your unity with Omnipotence. »Still water runs deep;« contemplate the multitudinous opportunities to which you have spiritual access by the Omnipresence of power.

If this point is incomprehensible, then it helps to realise the following: Haanel's point - and he mentions it again later - is that the Universal does not act selfishly and self-seekingly, but makes everything available in abundance. This happens through the principle of spirituality, for spirit is creative and the only faculty the 'I' possesses is that of thought. If your deeds have hitherto been directed towards enriching yourself, then initiate a conversion in thoughts, words and deeds. Your thoughts, words and actions must now be directed in such a way that they are of benefit to all concerned. In this way you increase things. You are in harmony with the laws of nature. This leads to an amplification of vibration which multiplies things for you too. An American talk show host once said, 'Your income is the average of your five best friends'. Dwell on this phrase a little and relate it to what was mentioned earlier.

4:23

Visualize the events, circumstances and conditions which these spiritual connections may assist in manifesting. Realize the fact that the essence and soul of all things is spiritual and that the spiritual is the real, because it is the life of all there is; when the spirit is gone, the life is gone; it is dead; it has ceased to exist.

Even if the physical is then technically dead, it is still not gone. It will decay and be utilised by other organisms. In this way, new life can arise again on many levels. This also makes it clear that we are not separate from creation, but an integral part of it. Ergo: I am not my body; my body is of me! I am not my mind; my mind is from me!

4:24

These mental activities pertain to the world within, to the world of cause; and conditions and circumstances which result are the effect. It is thus that you become a creator. This is important work, and the higher, loftier, grander and more noble ideals which you can conceive, the more important the work will become.

This statement may bring you to a complete reorientation of your activities. Noble thoughts must inevitably express themselves in noble deeds, and it is this very noble way of thinking that will bring you life on higher planes, as you increasingly associate and exchange with people who think and act as you do. This alone opens up many new possibilities for engagement and expression.

4:25

Over-work or over-play or over-bodily activity of any kind produces conditions of mental apathy and stagnation which makes it impossible to do the more important work which results in a realization of conscious power. We should, therefore, seek the Silence frequently. Power comes through repose; it is in the Silence that we can be still, and when we are still, we can think, and thought is the secret of all attainment.

Frequent visits to the silence will almost come naturally with further study. You will find that you keep away more and more from 'transmitters' whose signals are not good for you. This gives you time for yourself. This process is quite natural - it happens without any effort on your part.

4:26

Thought is a mode of motion and is carried by the Law of Vibration the same as light or electricity. It is given vitality by the emotions through the Law of Love; it takes form and expression by the Law of Growth; it is a product of the spiritual »I«, hence its Divine, spiritual, and creative nature.

Here it is important to realise that it is the feelings that give life to the thought. This will be discussed in detail later. But it also explains why not every thought is realised. The feeling is purely technically a downward transformation from the spiritual to the physical level, where life is expressed for us. If something does not materialise there, the reason is therefore that there are no feelings that could express this thought construct on the physical level. The connection is missing. Feelings are connection. They are the experiencing. They are ultimately the life, the sensation, the interpretation of the nerve impulses received by our mind.

4:27

From this it is evident that in order to express power, abundance or any other constructive purpose, the emotions must be called upon to give feeling to the thought so that it will take form. How may this purpose be accomplished? This is the vital point; how may we develop the faith, the courage, the feeling, which will result in accomplishment?

Very important: All that you imagine, you must ultimately feel, so that it becomes reality. The key to this is 'joy'. It triggers the pleasant feelings in you, which then lead to the emergence of the life force. This is very important to understand, because many people have asked me what it is about feeling, or how you can feel your way into a thing or an ideal. It is joy! You can evoke this in yourself for no reason at all or at any time - just like a little child.

4:28

The reply is, by exercise; mental strength is secured in exactly the same way that physical strength is secured, by exercise. We think something, perhaps with difficulty the first time; we think the same thing again, and it becomes easier this time; we think it again and again; it then becomes a mental habit. We continue to think the same thing; finally it becomes automatic; we can no longer help thinking this thing; we are now positive of what we think; there is no longer any doubt about it. We are sure; we know.

There is so much meaning in this single paragraph. You have to repeat something so that it becomes a habit and eventually becomes you. Through repetition you get certainty. In the word certainty there is not only 'certain' but also 'knowledge'. So through repetition you move from believing that something is possible and can be realised for you to knowing that it has happened. This makes the creative process transparent and comprehensible to everyone.

4:29

Last week I asked you to relax, to let go physically. This week, I am going to ask you to let go mentally. If you practiced the exercise given you last week fifteen or twenty minutes a day in accordance with the instructions, you can no doubt relax physically; and anyone who cannot consciously do this quickly and completely is not a master of himself. He has not obtained freedom; he is still a slave to conditions. But I shall assume that you have mastered the exercise and are ready to take the next step, which is mental freedom.

For the first three weeks you have been consistently prepared for this exercise. It is indispensable for you to let go of old thoughts and behaviours, to say goodbye to them and replace them with new ones. But this is only possible if you are able to relax your mind, i.e. to stop thinking certain thoughts. The easiest way to do this is to replace them with others. Since negative thoughts express themselves through tension, you know that you have replaced them with positive ones when you are relaxed and at peace.

Here you need to gain mastery over your physical and mental being. The extent is according to your own needs and desires; but know that it is primarily a matter of attaining silence of thought, not only to make room for new, constructive thoughts, but also to enter into contact with Omnipotence through silence. Through this you will receive the appropriate information that will help you on your new path.

4:30

This week, after taking your usual position, remove all tension by completely relaxing, then mentally let go of all adverse conditions, such as hatred, anger, worry, jealousy, envy, sorrow, trouble or disappointment of any kind.

At this point, remember the previous chapter that dealt with the solar plexus. Through calm and deep breathing you relax physically. This allows you to relax your thoughts as well. The emotions that Charles Haanel is talking about here are all related to the sympathetic system. Therefore, physical relaxation and knowledge of the function of the solar plexus come first here.

4:31

You may say that you cannot »let go« of these things, but you can; you can do so by mentally determining to do so, by voluntary intention and persistence.

Your mental purpose is your engagement; your intention then determines your attention, which, as we know, is followed by energy. Persistence is the repetition and discipline that leads you from belief to knowledge, from uncertainty to certainty.

4:32

The reason that some cannot do this is because they allow themselves to be controlled by the emotions instead of by their intellect. But those who will be guided by the intellect will gain the victory. You will not succeed the first time you try, but practice makes perfect, in this as in everything else. You must succeed in dismissing, eliminating and completely destroying these negative and destructive thoughts, because they are the seed which is constantly germinating into discordant conditions of every conceivable kind and description.

A fundamental point! It is imperative that you control your emotions instead of continuing to be driven and determined by what has been imprinted and drilled into you through multiple influences, especially in the first 5 years of your life.

The one who controls his emotions is master of his own life, while the other is a pawn. The latter sees himself as a victim, powerless - without power! - and thus blind to the countless possibilities of improving circumstances and things, which would come to his attention at the very moment he catches himself and begins to observe himself critically. Therefore, please pay more and more attention to your emotions and ask yourself what is causing them and whether they are really appropriate at that moment. This is a significant step towards self-knowledge and self-control!

About the exercise

This week you relax mentally, removing any kind of negative thought. Hate, worry, anger, jealousy, sadness, envy, problems and disappointment have no place outside of your mind, so if you entertain them there, simply let them go. They aren’t life-affirming, but life-negating. They rob you of your energy instead of increasing it. Also, by freeing yourself from such thoughts, you free yourself from the corresponding emotion. Subsequently, you will make space for the opposite kind of energy: love, compassion, understanding, friendship, joy, contentment, and sovereignty.

By mastering this exercise you can then control and therefore relax both your physical and mental being. This is the absolute foundation for all other exercises, so it’s compulsory to master these first. If you still struggle with one of them, take your time and put in an extra effort - it’s well worth it!

Practical tips

  • This is one of the most important parts of the Master Key System. Once you have really grasped and internalized that you are in essence Spirit, with infinite possibilities at your disposal, there is no more holding back from anything you’ve set your mind on. “The word is the name of God”, I once read in an antique book. Remember this when you deal with the contents of Part Five.
  • Attention (and its precursor "intention") is the cornerstone of your life. Start paying attention to the small things. Look closely. Observe accurately. Only arrive at a conclusion after a thorough investigation. Reserve judgment until you have collected sufficient evidence.
  • Again, spend time contemplating the enormity of the connection, interrelation and oneness of your true Self with the Universal Consciousness, because this quite literally develops your consciousness and increases the uses and benefits. Everything you do from now on is based on your laying the claim - based on your whipping the spiritual into form.
  • Charles Haanel later says: "The spirit of a thing is the thing itself." Think that over, please.
